Abstract

With the introduction of free market principles in Central and Eastern Europe, there will be an increasing need to provide timely and relevant information to businesspeople who may be interested in marketing their products or services in these countries. A team of researchers at Michigan State University has been developing a decision support tool of market information for many countries worldwide, including several in Eastern Europe. This decision support tool, the Country Consultant, incorporates judgments and guidelines pertaining to various aspects of the countries. The ultimate purpose of the Country Consultant is to aid end users in making intelligent decisions when selecting a country in which to market their products. Given the high risks, uncertain benefits, and lack of knowledge associated with trade and investment in Eastern Europe, the use of a tool such as this ensures a systematic and thorough approach for business executives. In addition, the program has the ability to update information, which is essential in view of the rapid pace of political and economic changes sweeping Eastern Europe.
